3 Rules for Color Selection:
1. Always get samples.
2. Always look at the samples in the same amount of light
and the same type of light you will have in the area.
3. Make sure you consider texture when selecting materials.
Rule No 1 – Always get samples.
Samples are often available and free of charge. Sometimes not. It’s well worth paying for them to be sure they are right in the space.
If you cannot get samples, make sure you can return the items if necessary.
Rule No 2 – Compare colors in same light you will have.
Always look at the samples in the same amount of light and the same type of light you will have in the area.
Different types of lighting such as LED, fluorescent, halogen, etc. have different effects on the colors of the materials.
If you look at samples with more or stronger light, you will be disappointed when the installation is
complete. Use the same amount of light you will have.
Natural light also has a huge effect on the material colors. It changes throughout the day. If you are
designing an area that will have natural light, look at the samples at different times of day and night.
Make sure you still like them when the light is different. That is how they will be seen.
Rule No 3 – Make sure you consider texture when selecting materials.
If the wall has a textured finish and you are researching paint colors, you probably want to use test paint. If you look at a sample chip and it is not the same texture as your wall, the color will look different when applied to the wall.
If possible, buy a small amount of paint for each color you are considering, apply on the wall to see the result. Texture makes a huge difference.
